Sculpting the Self

Jessalyn Finch's interactive sculptures extend distorted bodily forms into shared space, inviting viewers to physically engage with themes of body dysmorphia and self-perception. Constructed from cardboard, these large-scale works challenge traditional boundaries between artist, object, and audience. Participants are encouraged to navigate, touch, or even inhabit the sculptures, prompting a visceral reflection on how internalized body image and trauma shape our spatial and emotional relationships with our physical selves. By externalizing the fragmented body, Finch transforms private psychological struggle into a shared, participatory experience.

Sculptures from this collection will be seen in exhibitions: “Reconstructing the Self” Bloomington, MN | “Through the Mirror, Through the Mind” St. Paul, MN | “Echoes Within” Seattle, WA | “Living in the Disconnect” Rochester, MN | “Tangible Hallucinations” Minneapolis, MN | “Trust the Hours” Rochester, MN
