Wilderness Mask Photography

Jessalyn Finch began creating these wearable sculptures during the pandemic, drawing on ordinary materials found in her home. In a time marked by isolation and mediated interaction, the work investigates shifting dynamics of voyeurism, permission, and the evolving ways we perceive one another.

Constructed from torn cardboard, hot glue, paint, and repurposed helmets, the masks transform when inhabited by a wearer. Their presence blurs the line between object and body, altering how audiences perceive the work. Through living sculpture performances, Finch expands this exploration, staging encounters where the act of seeing — and being seen — becomes part of the artwork itself.
